Manuscript Critique Tasks
The Manuscript Critique Process
A manuscript critique editor takes several steps to help authors assess their story’s potential and improve its market appeal. At Atwood LLC, our process is as follows:
Prepare the manuscript for editing. Once the editor acknowledges receipt of the complete or incomplete manuscript, the first step involves generating a working copy and safeguarding the original securely.
Preliminary Read. The editor’s preliminary read-through serves to find (1) unresolved storylines, (2) any foreign language terms that may pose future issues, (3) chapter lengths, (4) adherence to the intended genre, and (5) a preliminary assessment of market potential before the comprehensive review. The editor also prepares the style sheet.
First Read. While reviewing the manuscript, the editor will provide in-line comments and take detailed notes on various information. As they continue reading, they will start to draw connections and develop an understanding of the direction in which the author intends to take the story.
Second Read. In the second read, the editor develops the original notes and meticulously arranges the content necessary for the style sheet. The edited manuscript keeps examples and clarification queries while moving more elaborate recommendations to the style sheet.
Style Sheet Completion. The editor completes the style sheet and drafts a cover letter (also known as a transmittal letter) that outlines (1) the items the author will receive, (2) guidelines for using the style sheet, and (3) the author’s next steps.
Final Cleanup. The editor carefully assesses the manuscript, notes the author’s accepted and declined suggestions, and revises the document as needed. Once complete, the editor returns a polished manuscript, the revised version, and all supplementary materials to the author.
